At Thermo Fisher Scientific, our mission is to enable our customers to make the world, healthier, cleaner and safer. As we soon celebrate Earth Day 2022, we continue to invest in our planet while constantly seeking new ways to innovate and serve our customers and society. We are working diligently on three core areas of impact:
Through our sustainable product design program, we evaluate product design and look for ways to reduce health and environmental impacts across a product’s lifecycle in order to move toward a more resource-efficient, closed loop system. This means a better process for sourcing raw materials, implementing eco-friendly alternatives for making and shipping our products, and seeking partnerships with our suppliers and customers to advance sustainability beyond our own four walls.
Our award-winning 100% recyclable paper cooler is a powerful example of our continued focus on product innovation. Thermo Fisher recently expanded the use of this sustainable solution eliminating approximately 650,000 cubic feet of [hard-to-recycle] EPS (expanded polystyrene,) foam (commonly referred to as Styrofoam) - enough to fill 24 Olympic-sized swimming pools.
Thermo Fisher has an extensive footprint around the world where our colleagues are working to deliver more sustainable operations. Building on our culture of continuous improvement, we are transitioning away from fossil fuels at our sites and accelerating our use of renewable electricity from new wind and solar generation. As an example, 40% of our facilities across Europe operated with renewable energy in 2021, several sites have new onsite solar plans underway, and one site achieved the complete transition away from fossil fuels by leveraging geothermal heating and cooling systems and capturing heat generated from operations.
We have some of the most dedicated, creative and innovative colleagues who are passionate and committed to driving sustainability across all areas of science. Our localized green committees are mobilizing opportunities across product development and operations, and our partnerships with organizations like My Green Lab are working directly with scientists to drive sustainable thinking across disciplines.
Our worldwide effort to accelerate sustainability is key to achieving our commitment to net-zero emissions by 2050.
As a life sciences company, we believe a healthy planet is important for overall human health and we see sustainability as a catalyst for greater innovation and scientific discovery. As we celebrate Earth day later this week and the many advancements we have made, we are focused on the critical journey ahead of us – one which is pivotal for a healthy planet, enabling our customers’ important work and ensuring science continues to be the epicenter of discovery in the years to come.
