WALTHAM, Mass., April 28, 2026 – Thermo Fisher Scientific has opened a new Bioprocess Design Center (BDC) at its Plainville, Mass., site, where customers can collaborate side-by-side with company experts to solve some of the most complex challenges in bioprocessing – all with the goal of bringing life-changing therapies to patients faster.

The new BDC features 4,000 square feet of laboratory and training space where customers can access Thermo Fisher’s comprehensive bioproduction solutions  as well as its expert scientists and engineers. Together, they will work to test ideas, troubleshoot challenges and optimize processes. Biologics development is a complex process, and production scale-up can be risky and costly. This collaborative approach is designed to help customers unlock productivity gains, reduce risk as they scale, make faster and more data-driven decisions and shorten timelines.

“The opening of our Massachusetts Bioprocess Design Center represents a significant milestone for Thermo Fisher and a major investment in the future of drug development,” said Daniella Cramp, senior vice president and president, BioProduction and Customer Excellence at Thermo Fisher. “We're bringing together our end-to-end bioprocessing solutions, world-class expertise and collaborative partnership model in one immersive space where our customers can accelerate their most critical work.”

Optimizing bioprocessing workflows early in the drug development process provides customers with a critical advantage as they move into later stages. They can also carry that momentum forward by continuing to partner with Thermo Fisher through preclinical development, clinical research, clinical trials, manufacturing and commercialization with Thermo Fisher’s Accelerator™ Drug Development 360̊ Contract Development and Manufacturing Organization (CDMO) and Contract Research Organization (CRO) services.

Thermo Fisher marked the opening with a ribbon-cutting event, welcoming customers, government officials and community partners for tours of the facility and a panel discussion. Attendees included Massachusetts Secretary of Economic Development Eric Paley and government officials from the Town of Plainville as well as MassBio CEO and President Kendalle Burlin O’Connell, Esq.; Massachusetts Life Sciences Center President and CEO Kirk Taylor, MD; and MassBioEd CEO Sunny Schwartz.

“Companies like Thermo Fisher Scientific are choosing Massachusetts because of our world-renowned life sciences sector, and we are proud to partner with them as they continue to grow and invest in our state,” said Governor Maura Healey. “This new Bioprocess Design Center will accelerate cutting-edge research, strengthen our economy, and create new jobs for workers across our state. Massachusetts continues to lead the nation in life sciences because we invest in innovation, support our workforce, and partner with companies that are delivering the next generation of life-saving therapies.”

Driving discovery locally and globally

The BDC is a strategic addition to Thermo Fisher’s 290,000-square-foot Plainville facility, introducing bioprocessing capabilities to its existing biologics manufacturing services. Located in the greater Massachusetts life science ecosystem, the Center is well-positioned to strengthen connections and collaboration across the U.S., creating more opportunities for shared innovation. Massachusetts is home to Thermo Fisher’s global headquarters, with approximately 3,400 colleagues across the Commonwealth. While it’s the first BDC in the U.S., it joins a global network across China, Korea, Singapore and India.

“This new Bioprocess Design Center is a strong example of why Massachusetts continues to lead in life sciences,” said Massachusetts Economic Development Secretary Eric Paley. “We are fortunate to have an ecosystem where companies like Thermo Fisher can bring together cutting-edge technology, world-class talent, and close collaboration to move breakthrough therapies from concept to production. Investments like this strengthen our position as a global hub for biomanufacturing and help ensure that the next generation of treatments is developed and delivered faster, right here in Massachusetts.”

“Thermo Fisher’s Bioprocess Design Centers reflect a simple but powerful truth: the fastest way to solve complex challenges is to solve them together,” says Adam Goldstein, senior director, R&D Collaborations. “Collaboration can remove barriers and help customers move from scientific breakthroughs all the way to real treatments that can bring hope to patients.”
