Read MoreLiving with polycystic kidney disease, Deanna Bohlen had long prepared for the possibility of a transplant. With a family history of the condition, she carefully managed her health for years. But over time, her kidney function declined, and in 2019, her doctor told her it was time to begin the search for a donor.
In 2020, Deanna shared her story publicly, posting on social media to raise awareness and ask if anyone would consider donation, a vulnerable moment that required both courage and hope.
Among those who saw her message was her cousin, Michelle Anderson. Motivated to help, Michelle completed the necessary testing to see if she could donate. Weeks later, she received the news: she was a match.
The transplant was successful, and the kidney began functioning immediately, an encouraging sign for both Deanna and her care team. In the weeks that followed, her recovery progressed quickly, and she was able to return to many of the activities she once enjoyed.
For Michelle, the experience was equally meaningful. As a living donor, she not only helped restore Deanna’s health, but also gained a deeper understanding of the impact of organ donation. Together, they share a connection shaped by a life-changing decision.
Today, Deanna and Michelle are using their voices to raise awareness and encourage others to consider organ donation, a reminder that behind every transplant is the opportunity to give someone more time, more milestones and more moments that matter.
