How a father's work became part of his son's story

WHEN John Brakefield was diagnosed with a severe congenital heart defect before he was born, his parents, Brad and Terisa, faced an uncertain future. An innovative fetal cardiac procedure and multiple open-heart surgeries followed, helping change the course of his life. Today, John is a thriving teenager who loves cooking, fishing and spending time outdoors and is looking forward to getting his driver's license.

Brad has worked at Thermo Fisher Scientific's Charlotte, North Carolina, site for 15 years. There, he and his colleagues manufacture Membrana™ capillary membranes, a hollow fiber membrane technology used across a range of applications, including in oxygenators that support patients during open-heart surgery.

For Brad, learning that the technology he helps manufacture supports procedures like those his son has undergone created a personal connection to Thermo Fisher's Mission to enable our customers to make the world healthier, cleaner and safer.

Watch the video to meet John and his family and hear their story.
