Even in rural areas

Physicians Laboratory Services (PLS) is an independent reference lab with an especially wide reach. Located in Omaha, Nebraska, PLS deploys a fleet of couriers that covers 5,000 miles daily retrieving samples from physician offices across Nebraska and Iowa. Dr. Gregory Post, the lab’s director of clinical services, says timeliness and cost-effectiveness are paramount, so its clinical testing services must be as advanced as possible.

Dr. Post points to ImmunoCAP and EliA tests from Thermo Fisher in particular when he reflects on increased productivity over the past five years, which he says has increased nearly tenfold. His lab tests nearly 2,000 samples with these assays each month. The ability to handle this volume –rapidly and accurately – enables PLS to bring the most advanced diagnostics to even the most rural areas of Nebraska and Iowa. Patients are no longer referred to specialists hundreds of miles away – local physicians can now review lab results with patients the morning after blood is drawn.

“Because Nebraska is fairly rural, the only option for many small-town physicians was to refer patients to an immunologist in a larger metropolitan area. Now, local physicians can simply draw blood and send it to us, allowing them to triage patients locally rather than referring them far away."
