Earth Day 2024

April 2024

On Earth Day and every day, I’m proud of the progress Thermo Fisher Scientific has made over the years to reduce our impact on the environment and help address climate change. I’ve also been thinking about our obligation and promise to do more.

Thermo Fisher’s commitment to the environment is deeply rooted in our Mission to enable our customers to make the world healthier, cleaner and safer.

Being a champion for a more sustainable world that supports human health and protects natural resources means we are contributing to a better future for generations to come. That’s why we’ve continued to accelerate our efforts.

Last year we established a new commitment to utilize 80% renewable electricity globally by 2030. To support this transition, we’ve been installing solar power at more of our sites and we’ve been working to provide renewable electricity to our operations.

In 2023, we entered into a unique agreement with one of our customers to address their climate goals while enabling us to power over half of Thermo Fisher’s European footprint with 100% renewable energy by 2025. Meanwhile, we’re on track to power our U.S. sites with 100% renewable energy by 2026.

At the same time, we continue to work with our suppliers to reduce emissions across our supply chain. And, throughout our businesses, we are reimagining how we design, produce, package and ship our products, and how we manage end-of-product life – so we can further reduce our environmental impact and help our customers do the same.

Thermo Fisher is also deeply committed to protecting the world’s natural resources, and we’ve stepped up our efforts to monitor water usage and the waste produced by our operations. I’m very pleased that we have increased our certified zero-waste sites from 14 (in 2022) to 21, with more to follow.

Of course, we also contribute to a more sustainable world by providing our customers with enabling technologies that help them monitor and reduce emissions and study climate change.

In all our efforts, Thermo Fisher colleagues play a critical role – contributing innovative ideas and leading many of the improvements at our sites. I’m deeply grateful for their passion and commitment to this journey.
