Mission in a Minute

World Blood Donor Day: June 14

Blood is not only vital for life, it also plays a critical role in protecting our health.

It carries oxygen and nutrients to cells, removes waste products and regulates body temperature. It also contains white blood cells that defend against infections, and platelets that aid in clotting to prevent excessive bleeding.

And for anyone having surgery or suffering from a serious illness or injury, a blood transfusion can often be a lifesaving procedure.

So it’s critical that we have a safe and stable supply of blood to help those in need. And in those times of need, Thermo Fisher Scientific is there, enabling our customers to make the world healthier. For example, our centrifuges help separate whole blood into red and white blood cells, platelets and plasma, while our blood bank refrigerators and plasma freezers safely store the products prior to patient transfusions.

And, with the ability to detect even the rarest types of blood groups, our Applied Biosystems™ Axiom™ BloodGenomiX™ Array and Software enables doctors to more precisely match blood and tissue types before transfusions and transplants, which is critical for patient health and safety.

On World Blood Donor Day, we not only highlight some of the many ways we fulfill our Mission, we also celebrate our colleagues, who organized more than 50 local blood drives last year, helping to increase the global blood supply for those who need it most.

When just one pint of blood can help save as many as three people’s lives, every drop counts. Thermo Fisher Scientific plays a pivotal role in maximizing the impact of blood donations by equipping hospitals and blood banks with the essential tools and technologies for efficient processing, storage and matching of donated blood.
