World Oceans Day, annually observed on June 8, raises awareness of the importance of protecting and conserving our world’s oceans.
The ocean provides us with many resources and services including oxygen, climate regulation, food sources, medicine and more, however, our use of plastics in everyday items and manufacturing processes can harm our environment and food chain.
As time goes on, plastics that are not properly recycled break down into tiny particles, potentially leaving negative consequences on human, animal and ecosystem health.
As part of our commitment to our Mission, to enable our customers to make the world healthier, cleaner and safer, Thermo Fisher Scientific works to provide education and consultation to customers looking to identify and analyze microplastics. Our Thermo Scientific Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy solutions enable our customers to identify, characterize and quantify microplastics from a variety of sample sources, one being ocean water.
Even if you are not a spectroscopy expert, you can help conserve our oceans. As we enter the summer months, visit a local beach, or your favorite walking route, and take a few minutes to pick up trash.
