Leadership

Our path to net-zero

November 2022

I’ve been thinking a lot about our company and our responsibility as the world leader in serving science to create a healthier, cleaner and more sustainable world. We’ve taken many steps over the years to reduce our impact on the environment and help address climate change.

That’s why I’m so proud Thermo Fisher has just announced a new target to reduce our operational greenhouse gas emissions (Scope 1 and 2) by more than 50% by 2030 (from a 2018 baseline). This increases our previous goal, set in 2019, to achieve a 30% reduction by 2030 – which we are on track to accomplish ahead of schedule. Our new target represents an important milestone in our company’s pursuit of a net-zero carbon value chain by 2050.

Delivering on our interim target and setting a new one is a testament to the passion of our more than 125,000 colleagues around the world, who bring their best to work each day and enable us to advance our net-zero carbon emissions strategy, which includes:

  • Transitioning away from fossil fuels and accelerating the adoption of renewable electricity to power our facilities. Currently, more than 100 Thermo Fisher sites across the globe use 100% renewable electricity. Earlier this year, we entered into an agreement with Enel North America to source half of our U.S. electricity needs from wind power, which is a significant step forward.
  • Developing new products with the environment in mind. Our greener product alternatives and ENERGY STARTM certified instruments and equipment help scientists advance sustainability in the lab by minimizing the use of hazardous chemicals, decreasing waste and material consumption, and increasing energy efficiency.
  • Investing in infrastructure improvements that reduce the energy usage and emissions of our global operations.
  • Working with 90% of our suppliers (by spend) – the largest source of our Scope 3 emissions -- to set science-based targets by 2027 to reduce emissions across our global value chain.
