Design for sustainability

We leverage the power of innovation to positively contribute to a healthier world, which includes reducing the environmental impact of our products and packaging—from design to end of life. By incorporating environmental sustainability principles into each design step, we can better understand and reduce the environmental impact of our products early in the design process, ultimately delivering on our net-zero ambition while helping customers advance their sustainability goals.

Our strategy is focused on five key impact areas:

  • Less hazardous
  • Less waste
  • More energy efficient
  • Responsibly packaged
  • Extended life

Products

We strive to make it easier for our customers to understand the environmental impacts of products to help them make the best purchasing decisions as we provide robust buying options to support their needs. Through transparent product labels and third-party certifications, customers can quickly identify products that meet their sustainability criteria.

Product labeling

We believe it should be easy to make informed purchasing decisions. Our environmentally preferable product alternatives are labeled with a green leaf symbol on thermofisher.com, and we provide detailed substantiation for all our claims.

Thermo Fisher is also a leading participant in the ACT Environmental Impact Factor Label program created by the non-profit organization My Green Lab. The ACT label is designed to address the needs of both scientists and procurement specialists for clear, third-party-verified information about the environmental impact of laboratory products.
