Mission in a Minute

Living Donor Day: April 3

Living Donor Day is a celebration held every April during National Donate Life Month in the United States. It honors the lifesaving generosity of living organ donors and aims to raise awareness of the ongoing need for living donation both in the U.S. and around the world.

Over 45,000 organ transplants were performed in the U.S. in 2023, with about 6,900 coming from living donors. But the need remains great, with more than 100,000 patients currently waiting for a lifesaving transplant.

Thermo Fisher Scientific develops, manufactures and distributes comprehensive molecular tissue typing and antibody detection assays and provides instruments, software and laboratory services that serve the clinical and research segments of the transplant community. Our products and services enable transplant centers to match patients and donors prior to organ transplantation as well as monitor patients after transplantation for the presence of antibodies and biomarkers that can ultimately lead to organ rejection.

In short, we help match the right donor to the right patient and support the entire transplant patient journey, enabling better outcomes and improving quality of life. We are also committed to supporting our colleagues who choose to become living donors. In 2023, Thermo Fisher was named to the Living Donor Circle of Excellence by the American Society of Transplantation, a prestigious honor celebrating organizations that actively contribute to breaking down barriers associated with living organ donation.
