World Diabetes Day: November 14

Did you know that World Diabetes Day is marked every year on November 14th because it is the birthday of Sir Frederick Banting who co-discovered insulin along with Charles Best?

1 in 10 adults worldwide have diabetes, and out of those, more than 90% have Type 2. World Diabetes Day was established by the International Diabetes Federation to raise awareness of both the risks as well as the opportunities to better prevent, diagnose and manage the condition.

Our Thermo Scientific Indiko Clinical Chemistry analyzers can help improve patient care by offering all the essential assays to health care professionals for diabetes monitoring, short- and long-term blood sugar testing as well as monitoring urinary albumin excretion.

Additionally, our clinical research business has conducted 59 diabetes studies over the past five years (Types 1 & 2) in both adult and pediatric patients. Our global presence of board-certified endocrinologists is well-versed in understanding and managing the unique challenges of diabetes trials, which can help customers increase their probability of success.

Thermo Fisher is also manufacturing diabetes medications for our pharmaceutical customers, including oral solid dose to sterile injectable therapies – from development to commercialization.

According to the World Health Organization, diabetes was the direct cause of 1.5 million deaths in 2019, and of those, 48% occurred before the age of 70 years. Today and every day, we are proud to support and enable efforts to diagnose and treat diabetes and ultimately improve outcomes for patients around the world.
